What’s the Cargo Space like in the Ford C-Max Energi?

Answer: The downside of the Ford C-Max Energi is the increased space used for the batteries.  The second-row 60/40 split seat folds flat for added storage with the C-Max Hybrid, but it does not fold flat for the C-Max Energi.  The space used by the batteries is substantial as the photos below illustrate.  The hatch opening is 32.5″ high.  The distance from the cargo floor (top of the batteries) to the roof at the hatch is 23″.   The cargo floor is raised for the battery 9.5″ at the hatch and 7.5″ inches from the top of the folded rear passenger seats.  The hatch opening width is 33″ at the top and 38″ at the widest point.  The depth from the front seat to the back of the hatch is 66″.  The depth from the back of the hatch to the back of the upright rear seats (not folded down) is 31″.  The width of the cargo floor is 36″ at the narrowest point.

John Davis, the chief engineer for the C-Max stated that Ford expects only 15-20% of the C-Max’s sold will be the Energi model.  This is interesting.  As I’ve stated before, I think the Energi is a no brainer.  The reduced cargo space could be a big factor in favor of the HEV (hybrid) over the PHEV (Energi) though.

The Ford C-Max Hybrid uses far less space for the battery than the C-Max Energi as shown in the photo below.
