Since the Ford C-MAX Energi was first introduced in the U.S. in October 2012, Toyota sold more of its Prius Plug-in, the Energi’s closest competition, every month through July 2014. Since August 2014, there’s been a dramatic collapse in Plug-in sales. Since August 2014, 32% more C-MAX Energi vehicles were sold than the Toyota Prius Plug-in. More C-MAX Energi vehicles were sold in every one of these months except two. It only fell behind in those two months by 8 and 12 vehicles. During the last year, gasoline prices dropped and sales of energy-efficient vehicles struggled. During the 12 months ending June 2015, Ford C-MAX Energi sales dropped just 6% from the same period ending June 2014. C-MAX Energi sales have been fairly stable. Prius Plug-in sales dropped an astounding 60% over the same period. Ford has sold more C-MAX Energi than Prius Plug-in vehicles nine months during the last year (July 2014 through June 2015). Over that period, 17% more Energi vehicles were sold than the Prius Plug-in.
