Common Electricity Questions for the C-Max Energi

What’s the difference between a charger, charge station and EVSE?  The Ford C-Max Energi uses a J1772 compatible charge station, also called an EVSE, which means “electric vehicle service equipment.”  The electrical components involved in charging the Energi are located in the car and the charge station.  Although the electronics that convert the AC of the house to the DC used by the Energi is located in the vehicle, it is common to refer to the EVSE or charge station as the charger.

What’s the difference between Level 1 and Level 2 chargers?  The Level 2 chargers are faster.  There are two types of chargers for the C-Max Energi, AC Level 1 and 2 both with the same J1772 connector.  A Level 1 charger is supplied with the C-Max Energi.  A Level 2 charger can be purchased and installed in your home.  Level 2 chargers are often available in public locations for free.  A Level 2 charger will charge about three times faster for a C-Max Energi.  According to various posts, the Level 2 chargers are somewhat more efficient, about 80% compared to 72% for the Ford Level 1 charger[The SAE International charging configurations and ratings terminology sheet is here.]

I’ve tried faster J1772 Level 1 and Level 2 chargers, but the C-Max Energi doesn’t charge any faster.  Why?  Because charging equipment is inside and outside of the C-Max Energi.  I haven’t been able to find specifications for the on-board charging regulator for the C-Max, but based on charging times of 7 hours at 120V and 2.5 hours at 240V, it appears as though the Energi is limited to 1.4 kW for Level 1 and 3.3 kW for Level 2 chargers.  It won’t speed charging times for a Level 1 or Level 2 charger with faster kW specifications.  Level 1 AC chargers use the standard AC 120V receptacle and can operate at 1.4 kW drawing up to 12 amps of current and 1.9 kW drawing up to 16 amps.  Level 2 AC chargers use standard AC 240 V split phase and can operate at 3.3 kW, 7.2 kW and 19.2 kW drawing up to 80 amps for the 19.2 kW 2009 specification.

How much electricity is required to charge a C-Max Energi? About 8 kWh for a full charge with the Ford 120V Level 1 charge station supplied with the C-Max Energi.  This is based on measured full charges with our Energi using a Kill-A-Watt meter.

How efficient is the Ford 120V Level 1 charge station?  72%.  Tom in San Diego posted in the Fordcmaxenergiforum results of testing the efficiency of the Ford 120 Volt charge station that comes with the Energi.  It is only 72% efficient (see the graph below).

How much does this electricity cost?  Electricity costs vary widely.  There could be a discounted price for charging at night.  At my home (which is typical), the cost is 12 cents per kWh.  The cost to fully charge the battery would be about one dollar.

Are there public charging locations?  What do they cost?  There are more than 10,000 public charging locations in the U.S.  About 85 percent of the public chargers are free.  There are different ways to find charger locations.  (As of August 2013, free chargers are less common.  In Utah, Walgreens has started charging $2.50 per hour, which would make the electricity more expensive than refueling with gasoline and less convenient.)

How much does it cost to drive with electricity rather than gasoline?  It depends on your cost for electricity at home and how often you use free public chargers.  Using 12 cents per kWh you can drive about 24 miles in the city for one dollar.  Assuming you drive 20 city miles each day on electricity and you pay 12 cents per kWh, your annual cost for electricity will be about $410.  According to the EPA, the C-Max Energi has ratings of 108 MPGe city, 92 MPGe highway, and 100 MPGe combined.  The EPA uses 33.7 kWh per gallon-equivalent to calculate the MPGe.  The corresponding miles per kWh would be 3.20 city, 2.73 highway, and 2.97 miles/kWh combined.  The cost of a kWh is typically 12 cents.  Assuming 72 percent efficiency when charging, for one dollar a C-Max Energi could be driven 19.2 miles city, 16.4 miles highway, and 17.8 miles combined.  [The calculation is ((108/33.7)/.12)*.72 for the city.]  As with gasoline, how you drive will affect your cost.  The EPA states the 2012 Nissan Leaf gets miles per kWh of 3.15 city, 2.73 highway, and 2.94 combined.  My personal experience with a Nissan Leaf is better.  My average is 4.1 miles per kWh after driving more than 8,000 miles in a Nissan Leaf.

What is the range of the C-Max Energi when driving with electric energy only?  When C-Max Energi is put in EV Now mode, it uses only electric energy (EV).  According to the EPA, the electric energy range for the Energi is 21 miles.  According to a Forum post by Tom in San Diego, 21 miles is consistent with his experience (see the graph below).  The distance you drive with electric energy will be dependent on how and where you drive.

Do I need to use the charger that comes with the C-Max Energi to charge it?  No.  Any 120V AC Level 1 or 240V AC Level 2 charger with the J1772 connector will charge the C-Max Energi.  The Tesla and Nissan fast chargers are not compatible with the J1772 standard or the C-Max Energi.

How long does it take to charge the C-Max Energi?  According to Ford, it takes 7 hours with the 120V AC Level 1 trickle charger that is supplied with the C-Max and 2.5 hours with a 240V AC Level 2 charger.  Based on full charges with our Energi, it takes 6 hours with the 120V AC Level 1 charger.  Based on full charges with our Energi, it takes just over 2 hours with a 240V AC Level 2 charger.  These times assume the battery is fully discharged.  It probably isn’t.

Are there any special requirements for a charger?  The 120V AC outlet that you plug your Level 1 trickle charger into should be on a dedicated 15-20 amp circuit.

What does it cost to upgrade to a Level 2 charger in my garage?  The cost depends on the charger you select and the cost of installation.  Installation costs vary from a couple hundred dollars to thousands of dollars, depending on your home.  Although any J1772 charge station will charge the current C-Max Energi at its fastest possible rate, it may make sense to install a 30 amp charger to support future vehicles.  The increased cost is not that significant.  It is also important to make sure that the cord is sufficiently long to satisfy current and future vehicles.  There are a few good choices.  ClipperCreek now has the HCS-40.  This 30 amp EVSE with a 25 ft cord sells for $590.    Bosch has the 30 amp PowerMax EVSE with an 18 ft cord priced at $593.  Another good alternative is the Schneider Electric EV Link 30 amp at Home Depot for $599 with an 18 ft cord.  If you decide to install a 240V Level 2 charger, it makes sense to have an electrician install a 240V outlet in the garage on a dedicated line.  That makes it possible to move the charger to another location.  The tax credit for installing a charge station expired on December 31, 2013.

When I’m done charging, can I just pull the charger from the 120V outlet?  No. Do not pull the charger’s wall plug from the outlet while the vehicle is charging. This can damage the cord or outlet.  Disconnect the J1772 connector from the C-Max Energi first.

Are there concerns about the high voltage of the C-Max if I’m involved in an accident?  Yes.  A short blog was published on this, “Emergency Response for The Ford C-Max.”  The C-Max High Voltage disconnect is located behind the rear passenger side seat.

Are there two batteries for the Ford C-Max Energi, for “hybrid” and “plug-in” operation?  No.  However, from the user perspective there appears to be two.  The software for the drivetrain divides the battery into a 1.1 kWh “hybrid” battery and a 6.5 kWh “plug-in” battery according to an article in Automotive Engineering Online.  As far as I can tell, Ford never charges the battery to 100% or discharges it to 0% to prolong battery life.  A full charge of the Energi adds about 5.5 kWh of charge to the battery and requires about 8 kWh from the wall (electric meter).  When the potential energy is high (at the top of a hill, canyon or mountain) and a long descent is encountered, after the “hybrid” battery is fully charged the “plug-in” battery will start charging.  As a test, I drove up American Fork Canyon until the “hybrid” and “plug-in” batteries were completely discharged and the ICE (internal combustion engine) started.  I then turned around and descended to the starting point.  The hybrid battery was fully charged and the “plug-in” battery had a 30% charge after returning to the start.

  1. I haven’t heard of that. A J1772 240V charger at Home Depot is $300 more. The Ford charger that I’m aware of is about $1000 more. If you find out about a $500 charger that is Level 2, please let me know.

  2. The estimated power you listed to charge the car (8.5kWh) is an over-estimate. The battery may be 7.6kWh and the charger may indeed be about 90% efficient, but the engineers at Ford would never allow the battery to get down to zero charge. In fact, doing so with a lithium battery would turn it into a brick. To ensure that the battery is safely padded, they probably don’t let it go below 20% (even though it will say it goes lower). From my brief experience so far (a few days of charging), it looks like it draws a little more than 1kW for about 6-6.5 hours.

    • It is an over-estimate. Ford uses 6.5 kWh for EV and 1.1 kWh for HEV. I haven’t found a reference for how far they let the battery discharge. I haven’t seen documentation supporting more than 80% discharge would turn it into a “brick”. If you find more than comments on forums, please let me know.

  3. Stop inaccurately using the term “charger”. In almost every case where you use the word “charger”, you actually mean EVSE. In J1772 L1 and L2 AC charging, the charger is on-board the car. See diagram at (ignore the DC quick charging part, that’s for the optional CHAdeMO port on the Leaf).

    As I posted elsewhere (this is more generally applying to EVs and PHEVs):
    “Calling them the right thing is important because there can be serious confusion re: charge rate and hardware (e.g. if you buy and install the wrong EVSE, wasting money OR you wanted a higher charging rate and got a lower max input/output OBC, which can’t be upgraded or bought the wrong EV/PHEV). There are a bunch of limiting factors to charge rate like max output of EVSE, line voltage, max output and input of the car’s on-board charger, etc.

    The ’11 and ’12 Leaf only had a 3.3 kW on-board charger (same deal w/the current Volt and Spark EV), while cars in that era of those Leafs like the Focus Electric and Fit EV had 6+ kW on-board chargers. The Rav4 EV has 10 kW OBC, like the Model S does standard. The Model S can be equipped with a 2nd 10 kW OBC (look under under High Power Home Charging). Notice they refer to:

    With the ’13 Leaf, a 6 kW OBC is optional (standard on the SV and SL trims while optional on the cheapest trim, the S), POTENTIALLY increasing the charge speed at 200+ volt AC charging. See

    The Aerovironment EVSE (both Nissan branded and non) at which has been sold since the ’11 Leaf has a max output of 30 amps but a 3.3 kW OBC car will only pull 16 amps @ 240 volts, at max (if memory serves). A 6.x kW OBC car will pull somewhere between 25 and 30 amps at 240 volts.

    If you buy an EVSE that can output only 20 amps (e.g. Clipper Creek LCS-25), you will not be charging a Leaf or other vehicle w/6+ kW OBC at full speeds.

    The $450 Bosch unit cited at only has a 16 amp output at max for the cheapest version. This will make no difference for a 3.3 kW OBC car (e.g. Spark EV, Volt, Plug-in Prius (possibly only 2.x kW OBC), ’11 or ’12 Leaf, ’13 Leaf S w/o optional 6 kW OBC, etc.) but will if you have a higher wattage OBC.

    To take full advantage of a 10 kW OBC car (e.g. Model S or Rav4 EV), the EVSE must support 40 amps at 240 volts (see, for example).”

    An L1 and L2 EVSE has no knowledge of the battery’s voltage, state of charge, temperature, cell voltages, etc. It also performs no conversion of AC to DC nor does it alter the line voltage.

    • I just discovered that your post was in “pending” yesterday. I realize that EVSE is technically correct, but charger is frequently used by manufacturers, retailers, and potential customers. I don’t see that using EVSE clarifies this. The text of this article makes the distinction that you’re concerned about at least somewhat clear. However, based on your advice, I have made some changes to the article.

    • I don’t have the 240 unit.I use the one that came with the car. I live in new york the outside temp.Only givgives me about 13 miles of a charge. Am I doing something wrong.I will up grade to the 240.when I get some extra money

      • A Level 2 J1772 EVSE (“240”) will not increase your distance traveled. Your distance of 13 miles is probably because of a cold battery and use of the heater. We’ve driven the Ford C-MAX Energi and Nissan Leaf through winters in Utah. In winter, the mileage you get will be significantly less.

      • In Oregon my 2014 c max energi gets more charge in warm weather and less in winter between 19 to 24. Highest I ever got was 26. The car is always charged in the garage I have a Siemens 230v charging unit

    • For the C-Max Energi, they will charge at the same rate because the Energi is limited to 3.3 kW. If you get a plug-in that is capable of faster charging, e.g., 6.6 kW Ford Focus or 2013 Nissan Leaf, the 30 Amp Level 2 EVSE will charge faster.

  4. Quick question :
    We have the opp to charge in a garage from a 120v outlet. Any suggestions on how to secure the charger while its charging in a public place? Its an expensive piece of equipment and chances of theft in a public unsecured setting can be very high.

    IF we do use an extension cord, where and how should we place the charger

    • With the 120v charger that comes with the Nissan Leaf you can put a paddle lock on the latch so it cannot be removed from the car. The Ford charger doesn’t have this simple feature. I don’t have a suggestion. It may be possible to drill a hole in the Ford charger’s latch. An extension cord isn’t recommended. You’re on your own if you decide to use one.

      • So, here in North Carolina we do not have a garage. We did use a heavy duty extension cord with the charger that came with the car. After nearly daily/nightly charging for 20 months, in January I had to unplug mid-charge. The extension/plug end was so hot that the prong end melted and the ground pin fell out of the cord. I don’t suppose there is anyway that the charger is under warranty from Ford. My dad (who actually owns the car) thinks this might be a good line to pursue, however, I am leaning towards that as a fruitless effort.

        Basically we never got around to running a 220 line out to the driveway. And buying a more permanent charger.

        I am missing my electric miles!

        • It’s interesting that you used it without overheating so many times before. You can always ask your dealer if it’s covered by the warranty. You can buy chargers that are far less expensive than the Ford. If you use an extension cord, you better make sure the gauge and length of the cord can handle the current draw of the charger in the future. You probably don’t want to start a fire!

    • I have found this depends on whether the climate control is on or off. If you turn off the climate control before turning off the car, you will probably see it shows 20-22 miles ( of course as soon as you turn it back on it will drop – climate control is costly!)

        • If toggling the climate control on and off doesn’t change the estimated range, it seems very strange to me. Jeff is correct that a number of about 14 is quite typical when climate control is on and the battery is charged fully.

    • Its just like any other Plug-In/EV, the EV Range is Dynamic to the driving style and temp conditions. IT will adjust over the course of your driving techniques and style to perform better than the 14 visible miles. In my VOLT ill get 46miles range displayed in summer and 25 in winter. Sometimes it shows 25 and stays there for a while…and I return on my computer over 30miles EV range.

      • I have noticed on my C max energi that over the last few days when I plug in overnight in the morning I show a battery with 41 miles range! When I drive it does feel like the range on these days is more but not twice my normal 21 miles. Any thoughts?

        • The vehicle makes a poor prediction based on a recent trip (or trips) that used little energy. I know I’ve seen 38-39 miles many times. I don’t recall seeing 41 on our C-Max Energi, but I don’t recall for sure what the highest number is. It doesn’t mean much. It could be a fun challenge to see how high the “predicted EV” range could be pushed with a long downhill descent (or multiple descents).

  5. What about charging frequency? For example, if I go on a five mile trip and return home and then want to drive 60 miles, is it okay to recharge after a short trip or does the battery need to be depleted before recharging again?

    • My practice is to connect the charger whenever we return home, on the Nissan Leaf and Ford C-Max Energi, regardless of how much the battery is discharged. I cannot find anything in the C-Max Energi manual on this subject. However, here’s an article that could imply there is a memory effect for lithium-ion batteries, including those used in EV and PHEVs: Also, keep in mind that your battery has at least an 8-year 100,000-mile warranty, and up to 150,000-mile warranty in some states.

  6. This reminds me a lot of the Organic Transit ELF Solar charged electric motorized/human powered hybrid Velomobile.Their philosopy is related too as short to medium distances can be solar powere (not the same though).

    • It does look interesting. You get portability which will be advantageous for some. Personally, I prefer the higher amperage EVSE to better support future vehicles.

    • I find it depends on the outside temperature and the climate control. If outside it is moderate (60-70) and the climate control is off during the whole drive, I get 20-22 miles. Otherwise it is less. Myfordmobile will tell you if you are fully charged or not.

    • Yes. This isn’t a problem. Here’s what the Wiki states on the J1772 standard, that the C-Max Energi uses: The J1772 standard includes several levels of shock protection, ensuring the safety of charging even in wet conditions. Physically, the connection pins are isolated on the interior of the connector when mated, ensuring no physical access to those pins. When not mated, J1772 connectors have no voltage at the pins, and charging power does not flow until commanded by the vehicle.

  7. Does the Siemens VC30GRYU Versicharge 30-Amp Electric Vehicle Charger with Flexible Indoor/Outdoor and 20-Feet Cord work with the 2014 Ford C-Max Energi?

  8. I installed the Siemens VC30GRYU Versicharge 30-Amp EVSE for my 2014 C-Max Energi. Should I set the kWh to its max of 7.2 or cut that to 3.5 kWh? Can the C-max handle the 7.2? Does it cost me more to run at 7.2 vs. 3.5? Does it matter?

    • It doesn’t matter. The C-Max Energi is limited by the electronics within the vehicle. It would charge at the same rate for either setting.

    • Roughly 8 kWh is what I measured with the Level 1 (see above). A level 2 J1772 would be less, a little less than 7kWh.

    I just leased a 2015 C-Max Energi this week. Love the car, but I’m having an issue with charging. I use the 120v charger that came with it, as well as plugging into a charging station at work. Initially, I was using the schedule to charge, but when I realized it wasn’t getting a charge, I switched to the Charge Now setting. I’ve had the car for a week, it’s never charged. I’ve watched the charging status, and the start and end times advance with the clock time, so it never actually starts charging.

    When I plug in the 120v charger, the green Power light comes on, but no lights come on for the Vehicle. The end that is plugged into the car fits correctly and the blue lights momentarily light up in a clockwise rotation twice, then they go out.

    Neither the sales people or the service dept. can figure out what is wrong. Any assistance on this would be greatly appreciated.


    • I know you understand charging, but what you’re describing looks like “Value Charging” is on. Turn car on, touch leaf icon at the bottom, settings, make sure that the Charge Now button is highlighted – at least on my C-Max (with older software) it is a lighter shade. Make sure you can toggle back and forth with Value Charging and Charge Now. You should see a difference on the display – Value Charging has the times. Leave it in the Charge Now state. If this doesn’t solve the problem, I still think that the car isn’t in the Charge Now state. What you’re describing is exactly what I’ve seen when I’ve had it in Value charging, forgot, and connected the EVSE during the day.

    Last year my electric bill went up sky high when I started charging my c max at home. I usually ignore the text notification or do not unplug it after it notify me thats it fully charge, especially at night until the next day. Does the cmax stop charging when it’s fully charge or does it continue to charge and used up my electricity until I unplug it out?


    • It will use some but very little. In some areas of the country, the charge for electricity goes up significantly the more you use. Make sure you’re charging off-peak (lower rates may be available after midnight) and investigate options to decrease the cost (e.g., special rates for EV charging). At the present time, gasoline may be a less expensive fuel for you.

  13. Similar to the above question — Is the charger using up power when its not plugged into the car? In other words, when I unplug and drive away, but leave the charger plugged into the wall, is the charger drawing power from the plug? — For optimal efficiency, Is it best to just unplug the charger from the wall when not in use? —- Thanxxx

  14. Question please: I live in Texas with lots of flooding. Any experiences with rain? How does the water react with the battery? How does the car drive on slick roads? all that I’m reading about safety and locking cords is making me a little nervous about possibly purchasing the C MAX Energi.

    • Hi Melissa. I live in Arizona. Lots of flash floods during the monsoon season and very heavy rain. Streets frequently flooded up to 10-12 inches. No problems at all with my C-Max going through water like that. I drive it everyday. The whole electrical system is very well protected against the elements. Hope this helps.

  15. I have a dilemma- I live in Florida. I put on average 30,000 miles per year on my Cmax Energi. The dealer is telling me I should purchase the additional warranty for the car in case the batteries or something else breaks on it as the costs will be very high for any repairs the car might need. All the mileage I have is highway, very little city mileage. I have not had any problems whatsoever with the car but I am really worried if the battery should go, I will be stuck with a $8,000+ cost of a new battery. I intend to keep the car for at least another 2 years, so probably another 60k miles. Is it advisable to take the extended warranty?

    • I agree with Leon – shop online. I also recommend a no deductible policy if you get one. I haven’t bought an extended warranty on a car before but with all the new technology in the C-Max Energi and the first model year (2013) decided to get one. Whether it is less expensive overall, I don’t know. Got an online quote from a Ford dealer. The dealer I bought the car from matched it so I bought it from them. More comments here:

  16. If you wish to purchase the extended warranty, shop it on-line with other Ford dealers. You should receive a much better price for a Ford Warranty. Do not let your dealer persuade you to buy form them.

  17. I just turned 105,000 miles and I still get about 23 miles per charge. I drive all highway miles at about 60-65 mph. I wouldn’t be too scared about the batteries going bad anytime soon in your case. Plus, the car can operate solely on gasoline at a pretty good MPG rating.

  19. My power cord 110 v charger plug grounding pin came loose and the unit stopped working. So I thought I would just replace the plug. It was only after I cut off the broken plug that I discovered that in addition to the black, white and green wires, there were two smaller wires, one brown and one blue. Does anyone know where these go? My Ford dealer service manager says he can’t find out, and that the solution is to buy a complete new unit. Seems a little extreme for a broken plug.

  20. Looking at buying a used 2015 C-Max energi. Do I need to check anything with the battery? Is it normal to be mostly charged and then turn it off and lose charge? If not charged overnight does it drop to a certain amount? Thx!

  21. In my experience, the battery should not lose much charge if not plugged in overnight. Maybe a mile. In colder weather, this could be more.

    You should not lose the charge once turned off. If that is the case with the vehicle you are considering, something is not right with the battery and/or charging capacity.

  22. My local utility has off-peak pricing 7:00 pm till 7:00 am weekdays and all day on weekends. However I can’t set up value charging to accommodate more than a six hour period before midnight nor before 7:00 am and weekends I seem to have no options for all day charging. Any ides would be appreciated.

    • I was slow to see this because of travel. It isn’t clear to me what you’re asking though. If you have a J1772 evse it takes about 2 hours to charge. The 110V AC charger that comes with the car takes about 6 hours to charge. Value charging can start at midnight and finish by 2AM or 6AM depending on the evse you use.

  23. Thanks Craig. After two weeks I finally (embarrassingly) figured it out. My old brain couldn’t get around the colours they chose for the bar graphics for setting times – green always means go (i.e. charge) in my world but it means don’t charge in Ford’s IT world!!!

    I’m hoping I can ask another question without re-posting?? I’m using the “L gear” position lots to re-energize and save brake linings but the “N’ lockout seems to have a mind of its own. Sometimes the gear lever locks and won’t go into neutral when pushing it back to “D” without depressing the un-lock button but other times it will slide right into “N” when doing so. Do you know if it is it programmed to lock out sometimes and unlock “N” at other times? Thanks

    • At one time, I used L gear but I found that the gas engine started more often than I liked, so I stopped. Lightly applying the brake on the C-Max will also charge the battery by using the motor(s) to generate electricity and it will slow the vehicle down. It doesn’t use the brake “linings” at all. Finally, I’m not sure what you mean by the lockout/un-lock button. Are you just referring to the button on the front of the shifter (not the downhill assist button on the side)?

  24. Hi Craig, I don’t drive in L – just use it to slow up for traffic/light/stop signs, etc. But I didn’t know the brakes don’t engage when applying them lightly – good to know.

    However, back to the shift lever puzzle – to put the gear lever back into D after using L one doesn’t need to push the button on the front of the lever but sometimes the lever will stop at D and sometimes the stop doesn’t engage and the lever will go all the way into N. It is not consistent – inadvertently slipping into N is not good – especially when one is accelerating. Have you experienced this or is my car faulty? or maybe it’s supposed to do this at times – I just can’t seem to figure out what triggers the gear lever to lock (or not).

    • I just noticed that I didn’t respond. Sorry. On my C-Max Energi, it is necessary to push the button to shift. It’s a 2013. I don’t know if this was changed.

      • Thanks Craig. The dealer doesn’t have any idea either, whether the button needs to be pushed in ALL instances to go to N from D or L or just under certain conditions in my 2014. Anybody else got any advice before I leave it for a day with them. It really is annoying not knowing if it’s going to inadvertently slip into N when leaving L.

        Another issue: my global remote window CLOSING won’t work – opening works fine – any ideas?

        AND, Lowes has the GE EV Charger Indoor/Outdoor Level-2 DuraStation Wall Mount with 18 ft. Cord on for US$398.00 less another 5% if you’re a member. I’m in Ontario Canada and here the best price is CAD$800.00! My California cousins going to mail one to me for at least a $150.00 savings. Oh to become the 51st state!

        • I wasn’t familiar with the remote global window opening – always something new. On my 2013 C-MAX Energi, the opening works. Closing isn’t mentioned in my copy of the manual. I found a video online showing how the closing works (holding down on the lock button for a few seconds). It doesn’t close the windows – maybe closing isn’t supported on the C-MAX – I don’t know. I found the DuraStation at HomeDepot and Lowes for the price stated. Interesting that it is so expensive at the Ontario Canada Lowes.

  25. Hello. I just ordered the $300.00 GE DuraStation from Lowes for my ’14 Energi. I have a 30amp dryer receptacle fairly close to the car and could just tap onto that for the EVSE. I know many are recommending it be on a 40 amp circuit but for me that would mean quite a bit of extra work re-wiring back to the panel. Will I lose any charging speed/capacity by using a 30 amp circuit? Any advice?

    • I think you’ll be fine with just the Ford C-Max charging. I’m not an electrician – this is just my opinion. The vehicle will charge just as fast. The Ford accepts current at a lower rate than most plug-in vehicles. That should mean that the DuraStation is not maxed out. That also should mean your 30amp circuit should be sufficient. However. I would be cautious about letting others charge at your location. They could have vehicles that take 7.2kW, the 30amp wire/fuse could be maxed out. I would be concerned that the wire could get hot under those circumstances. By the way, did you get a 25% discount and just pay $300 or is it the one that Lowes in US lists for $398.73?

  26. Thanks Craig. EV’s are as rare as dodos here in Canada (especially my part) so I can’t envision anyone else using it, but I will keep that in mind just in case. And no, that $300.00 must have been a Freudian slip – I meant to type $400.00.

  27. Craig, I can’t for the life of me figure out how to properly post to this blog – my age is showing – I’m not on any social networking sites like Twitter, etc. But maybe this question will get out there into the blogosphere – whatever that is.

    My Ford Mobile was “down for maintenance” the other day and my C-Max was programmed for value charging. At that time I wanted to plug in and “charge now” willing to pay a little more for “mid-peak” charging but I couldn’t access charging and my car wouldn’t charge. Was I really out of luck with no way, other than through MFM, to control my charge?

    I used MFM support and emailed this question to them – I got an auto-response saying they’d respond within 2 days – but no reply after a week. Any ideas? The dealer has been consistently CLUELESS on ALL of my questions about this car – they had no idea one could control charging from an app.

    BTW, my C-Max Energi is platinum metallic Tri coat white – my first choice in colour UNTIL I saw a photo of you next to, what I presume was, your baby blue baby! That is a beautiful colour – reminiscent of my father’s powder blue ’57 Caddy.

    • No. On the touch screen at bottom, touch the icon with the leaves. There are buttons for Value Charge and Charge Now at the bottom-right of the next screen. We have Ice Storm Metallic. They’re not selling that color now. Sorry about the slow responses. I’ve been traveling a lot.

  28. How can I select autoEV on my 2014 C-Max energi I know it’s on the steering wheel 5 button selector. I even called Ford Motor and the girl said scroll down and click twice on it. when you get there.It didn’t work.

  29. I have both a 110 and a 220 charger and have been using it for about 18 months. While I started out with 23-26 mile range on a full charge, it’s now at about 13 miles on a full charge, regardless of which charger I use. I figure this is due to degradation of the batteries (I now have 115,000 miles) and the fact that I’m not babying the throttle to conserve energy anymore.

  30. I just bought used Energi 2016 and I have only standard 120V Charger. I have heard that 240 circuit in my country is different than in US (after upgrade from 120V). And it is not so simple if I want to use 240V circuit with 240V US Charger. Is it true?
    I discovered three options how I can charge my car:
    1. Buy a transformer 240V to 120V. I Found one ~220V/~110V 2000VA. In this case charging will be longer (7h). Some electricians told me it is more healthy for battery than fast 240V charging. Is it true?
    2. Buy a 240V Charger from local dealer. It cost 550$ with waiting about 1 month after ordering.
    3. Buy a 240V Charger from ebay 16 Amp. It will cost totally about 350$ (300$ + 50$ delivery).
    I would appreciate for any advices of these or other solutions.

  31. Hi Craig! I bought my wife a 2016 Ford Fusion Titanium Energi last month and it appears that my electric bill has increased by $55.00. She typically drives under 20 miles per day, dropping off and picking up our son from school, a trip to the store (under 5 miles) and occasionally, a trip to the mall which drains the battery and switches over to hybrid. Whenever she comes home, she plugs the car in and leaves it plugged in all day until she needs it again. We have a flat rate for electricity and I’m wondering if she should leave the car unplugged during the day and plug in at night considering she rarely drains the battery, or is it ok to keep doing it the way she is doing it with respect to cost. side note: it has been extremely cold the last month and our gas bill increased by nearly $100 compared to the previous year, so I’m not sure if the gaspack drove up the electric bill or leaving the car plugged in all day. Thanks!

I have a 2016 CMax Energi with what appears to be an intermittent problem; the charging ring stays blue and the 240V charger does NOT turn off, once the car is fully charged; vary rarely, does the ring turn grey and the station turn off; I have also had this experience at public charging stations near my home.
    Has anyone had this? Is there something I am doing wrong when I plug in my car?

  33. I own a 2014 Ford C-Max Energi which comes with the 110V cord standard. Can this cord be used for 240V with an adapter, what type? What type of receptacle needs to be installed for 240V? Is this receptacle similar to an electrical dryer or range?

  34. No, you need a charge controller which has to be directly hard- wired into your electrical panel or hard-wired into a disused dryer receptacle box with the proper 30A breaker back at the panel. These can be gotten from Lowes/Home Dep., etc. and will come with the necessary new cable and plug. It’s a treat to recharge in about 2 hours, down form 7 or 8!

  35. Thanks for your tip, much appreciated. I have a 40 amp electric range recep on my outer wall which is not in use because I switched to a gas range. Will hard wire my c-max cable,
    that came with the car, directly into this box, when I get it placed on the outside.This should give me a 2 hour charge time.

  36. The level I cable which came with your C-Max will not do it. DON’T wire it into a 220v circuit – you will undoubtedly damage car and or cable. You must have a level II controller like the GE Durastation etc. and, when wired in to your old dryer circuit must be protected with a 30 amp breaker at the panel – not the 40 amp which is probably in there now.

  37. I have a Cmax energy 2017 and i have a question. How can we calculate the electrical energy base of the blue indicators on the left side of the dashboard were it written Év and Kwh ?

  38. I just found that the TurboCord charging cord trips my wall outlet and now the CMax has a check engine light on. Has something like this happened to anyone else? If so, why is that? I now have to take the car to the dealer to check the dash light and see if any damage to the car.

    • Has never happened to my ’14 C-Max Energi – I hope your dealer is a little more savvy about the car than my local has been. Let’s pray it’s something they can find and fix quickly and easily. FWIW I have had my Durastation II charge unit replaced twice under warranty by GE and now Chargepoint. I’m wondering if the two issues (beaker trip and engine light) are mutually exclusive. Give us a report when you get a solution.

  39. Problem solved. Actually, it was due to my mistake. I found a thread about the charging cord I have to disconnect the cord from the car first before unplugging the cord from the outlet and reverse when plugging the car to charge. Going back over my steps I realized that I plugged the cord to the car first before connecting to the AC outlet. This actually damaged the outlet, thankfully not the cord. The check engine light came on for a very short time due to the outlet tripping. I replaced the outlet and everything works fine again. This was not the first time I had plugged the cord to the car first and nothing happened but the one time it did, luckily it’s fixable with a $18 part and I don’t have to visit the dealer. I hope my bubbling helps others from doing the same.

  40. Bravo! My “charge” units is hard wired back to the electrical panel so not an issue for me but it’s good to know. Makes sense, I suppose, like in a modern home bedroom circuit an AFCI (arc fault circuit interrupter) breaker is required by code now so if it senses an electrical arc it trips the breaker. Probably what happens when you plug in or out at the outlet.

  41. Ok. The outlet is tripping again. Does anyone have a way to check the charging cord to see if it’s faulty? Unfortunately, I don’t have a garage for the car so it charges outside of the house. I purchased the cord about a couple of months ago so I don’t think it’s the cord. I don’t want to purchase another cord to see if that fixes my problem so I was hoping to get some hints on how to check the one I do have.

  42. I just unplugged the charging unit from my 2014 C-max and the circle ring is still on (illuminated) and the driver-side light under side window is also on. All other lights are off.
    What would be the cause of this? I trying to locate my manual for trouble-shoot answer.

  43. Doesn’t sound good. I’ve never experienced that. Since the car is a glorified computer I wonder if you can “reset” it somehow – like you would a smartphone which often fixes many issues. Call the Ford customer service line – they might be able to walk you through a reset. If it’s still under warranty take it to the dealer.

  44. I own a 2014 Cmax energi and work a rotational shift. I was wondering about the ability to shade a PHEV and charge it at the same time. Knowing almost nothing about input voltage from my 110 Level 1 cord , do you have any insight on the possibility of solar charging?
    I am in the minority when it comes to wanting needing higher amperage on board chargers because I wish to trickle charge. On colder wet days I wish to drive my car with a full battery. Doesn’t matter how long it takes to solar charge for me because when it’s hot and sunny I am riding on 2 wheels .
    Thinking about a few sections of felx pannel above the car providing shade while charging. I do understand heat is a panels enemy.
    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

  45. I have a C-Max-Energy 2013 and it takes only 5 hours to fully charge, and it only does 19.5 miles on a charge. Completely different from what they tell you at the dealership when you are buying it and what it says on the window sticker. At the dealer they tell you 40 miles per gallon and 30 miles per charge. I tried combining them and it does 59.9 miles per gallon/charge. Not very happy…

    • Your hybrid battery has experienced a decrease in capacity from age, heat and/or usage. One needs to monitor the temperature in an attempt to help with durability.

  46. Rick, my recollection is 21 miles and 7.5 hrs to charge. My experience is – average- 34 kms and around 2 hrs to charge on level II charger. real world experience cannot really be foreseen.- car’s computers just predict based on recent trips. Hills, electrical device usage, driving temperament, temperature all have a, usually reductive, effect on the ideal range stated by manufacturer.

  48. I have a 2013 CMax Energi. While I did install a level 2 charger at home (about 4 months after I bought the car), I do frequently use the Level 1 (courtesy) charger.

    There’s a recall for this charger for several model years. The plug end overheats and can be damaged and can damage outlets too.

    My summer electric driving range is above 21 miles. Thats May through September for me, when the temperature is normally above 60F. Spring and Fall, it drops to 16-18 (temperatures in the 50s.) In the dead of Winter (February, temperatures ranging from -3F to 10F), it can be 8 miles. I’ve been driving around town lately with the windows down in order to extend the range to 12 miles. The windows are down so that I don’t have to run the windshield defroster. The temperature has been 32F.

    I park my car in a carport, not a heated garage. I’ve found that leaving the car plugged into the Level 2 charger and using the “Go time” feature to pre-heat the car helps with the range a little bit (at least when leaving home – I have no access to level 2 charging capacity while at work.)

  49. Hey guys, its simple physical characteristics of lithium ion batteries, you gotta keep them cool with the fan motor in the summer and they don’t like cold. Even my Royobi cordless drill advises in the manual to avoid charging at low temperature. The batteries must warm a bit to take a charge.
    Realistically Ford did fudge the numbers for mpg’s and got busted for it….Also they don’t advertise that the AC / Heater uses a lot of juice. Remember there’s not compressor belt slaving power off the Cmax 2.0 motor. So what does all this mean ?
    You get a bunch of awesome mileage in the spring and fall. Coasting and hyper miling ” look it up” if ya don’t know …will help you out .
    BTW my other vehicle for work is a 2007 Hemi Powered 1500 4X4 that averages 15 mpg…im I happy doing long distance people hauling with my Cmax averaging 46 mpg. I do a lot of 15 mile work round trips so that keeps my electric miles high.
