Learning How to Operate the C-Max with Ford Videos

Ford has produced many videos illustrating the operation of the C-Max Hybrid or Energi.  They are disorganized and mixed with videos for other vehicles.  I’ve listed the videos that are applicable to the C-Max below.  Captions of videos that apply only to the C-Max Energi start with Energi.  Other videos are for both vehicles.

Energi Fuel Freshness and Oil Maintenance

Energi Charging

Energi Installation of a 240V Charging Station, Note: This is not required.  A 120V Charger is included with the Energi.  There are also other 240V solutions which I wrote about in a earlier blog.

Ford C-Max Hybrid and Energi Crash Testing

There are two groups that test vehicles for safety in the U.S.  The National Highway Traffic Safety Adminstration, NHTSA, and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, IIHS.  The results of the NHTSA tests are found at the Safercar website.  The testing procedures were made more rigorous in 2011 as explained by Edmunds.com, “NHTSA Revises Five-Star Safety Ratings.”  Ratings for vehicle model years before 2011 cannot be compared with 2011 and later because the testing procedures changed.  The NHTSA has finished testing the Ford C-Max Hybrid and Energi.  The Ford C-Max Hybrid and Energi have not been tested by IIHS.  The overall NHTSA rating is four stars out of five, frontal crash is four stars, side crash is five stars and rollover is four stars for both the Hybrid and Energi models.  If you’re interested in watching Ford C-Max vehicles destroyed, there are videos on YouTube for the Hybrid of the pole crash, frontal crash and side crash tests and for the Energi pole crash, frontal crash and side crash tests.

The response to an emergency for the Ford C-Max Hybrid and Energi are different from most vehicles because of the high voltages used for these hybrids as explained in, “Emergency Response for The Ford C-Max.”  Ford has published an emergency response guide for the C-Max Hybrid and Energi.  It may be useful for C-Max owners to read the guide and/or keep a copy in the C-Max.

Los Angeles Times: C-Max Energi Is Fuel Car with Best Mileage, Lowest Price

Ford C-MAX Energi

Ford C-MAX Energi is very fuel-efficient for the price

The Los Angeles Times published an article on March 12th, 2013 for the “Top 10 cars: best gas mileage, lowest sticker price”.  To create the list, they divided the car’s base price by its EPA rating for combined fuel economy.  Electric vehicles such as the Nissan Leaf were excluded from the list.  That gave plug-in electric vehicles (PHEV) the upper hand, because the MPGe combined was used for them rather than MPG used for all the other cars on the list. The Ford C-Max Energi was top on the list with a cost per MPGe of $329.50.  That doesn’t take into account the $3751 federal tax credit or tax rebates in states that lower the cost even more.  [The IRS has now stated that the tax credit is $4,007.  It was previously listed at $3751 and stated by Ford as $3750.]  Although one can argue that using both MPGe and MPG gave PHEVs an unfair advantage, I think it is very clear that if you can drive your Ford C-Max Energi largely on electricity, it hits the sweet spot for base price versus fuel economy.
